Here’s what I realized: the Carolina Hurricanes have not won a Conference Finals game since this Duplin Wine “10” was produced. Yesterday we celebrated 3,000 subscribers on YouTube — maybe we reverse-cursed things with this bottle. Shoutout to LK, who corrected me: it’s muscadine, not muscadIne. Had to get that Eastern North Carolina pronunciation straight.

I’m excited about opening this “10” and drinking it during the show because clearly this is what will spark a Carolina Hurricanes comeback. It’s been done before — the Flyers did it in 2010 against Boston, that famous Peter Laviolette comeback. Justin Williams was even part of that.

The Hurricanes Won’t Go Out Quietly

I actually expect the Canes to win tonight. Their resiliency has been their hallmark. I don’t see them going out like simps because I know how good Sergei Bobrovsky has been. I know how tight these games are.

But Rod Brind’Amour teams have the qualities of a cockroach — you cannot kill them. Just when you think they’re gone, they crawl back. So yes, I expect the Hurricanes to show their fastball. I expect to be in the building Friday night for Game 5.

Rod Brind’Amour Says They’re Doing Everything Right

Rod’s postgame message summed it up: everything is right except the puck going in.

He basically said:

  • They’re giving up nothing defensively.
  • They’re generating chances.
  • Hit several posts.
  • Power play didn’t deliver.
  • Florida’s power play did — that was the difference.

And it’s maddening because it’s been three games of doing everything right except scoring.

Process vs. Results — Rod’s Eternal Tug of War

Rod is a process guy — straight from the John Wooden “process > results” school via Peter Laviolette. When the process is right, the results follow. Except right now, the results aren’t following.

That’s the mental challenge: how do you keep faith in the process when Bobrovsky is on an historic heater?

Do the Hurricanes Have “The Guy”?

People are retconning the trade-deadline discussion now. “Where’s the finisher?” “Do they have the guy?”
But these questions ignore key facts:

  • Teravainen has been hurt.
  • Andrei Svechnikov is out (which changes everything).

  • Max Pacioretty was supposed to be one of those finishers — he never got healthy.
  • Their process still generated plenty of goals vs. New Jersey.

Florida Isn’t Scoring Much Either

These are one-goal games, with 5 combined overtimes in three games.

Florida? They’re not exactly lighting it up either. This isn’t the 7–5 Boston series or the Toronto series where they found offense.
